Just a little history...............
The Beginning. The world of the Grumpy Old Men, who shall be known as GOM, began in March of 1997. Several guys who were fans of the Activision Game, Interstate 76, banded together to form an over 30 AVA gang. It was a way for mature players to find a decent game and experience some camradarie. I started playing I-76 in July of that year and was soon online looking for a little action. As most of you find nowadays the game servers out there are full of little brats and hackers who have no respect for others and no concept of belonging to a team. Whilst cruising the AVA board I noticed a listing for the Grumpy Old Men an applied. After the "sniffed" me out for a few sessions they allowed me into the fold. The club ran well for several months, well into November when things petered out. It was hoped that the "Nitro Pack" would revive things, but alas, that was not the case. An attempt was made a few months later at a revival, but not much occured after that. One member did get a "Heavy Gear" chapter going for a while.
In March of 1998 I decided to revive the name and start a new club in the "Total Annihilation" universe. It went fairly well. Typically we would have about 6-8 active members in our loose affiliation that would meet at least once a week to rumble. A big boost came when another over 30 club, "The Gathering", associated themselves with us.
Another notable event occured in September 1998. I discovered that Yahoo had begun club pages and went and created one for the GOM. Until then everything was handled mostly through Email and ICQ. This was an excellent place to hang our hats so to speak. It was also good place to attract other players and exposed us all to different games and interest.
So here we are. We have more than 30 members in the Yahoo club, of whom maybe 12 are actively participating in some manner. I was also suprised to find that one of the Old GOMs, "Road Toad" has his own GOM chapter Playing in the European Air War game. I look forward to some aerial action with his band of Grumps.
The GOM Philosohpy: Have Fun. Don't cheat. Don't loose your cool. It's only a game and you do have a real life.
